Background
The team was approached by a pharmaceutical company to work on a digital solution to accompany a new drug for Alzheimer’s Disease to bring meaningful differentiation to the solution, support adherence, and empower persons with Alzheimer’s. The digital solution comprised of a digital sleeve for autoinjectors and a companion app.
The team had to inherit a predefined solution as the digital sleeve was already defined as a part of the intended patient experience. However many key technical aspects of the digital sleeve was yet to be defined, and out of the teams’ influence. We were left to work on the app with the assumption that it would integrate with the digital sleeve seamlessly, and adapt to any new information revealed as the projected progressed.
Alzheimer’s treatment is typically given by healthcare professionals in clinic settings. Patients with Alzheimer’s are expected to have more than one care giver. The primary goal for the app is to help the patient and their care givers build confidence in managing their treatment given in a completely new way.
Titration Explained
One of the main goal of the app is to help patients and care givers manage the drug’s complicated titration regiment. The drug is meant to be given at a low dose and frequency at the start. It’d then be increased in dose and frequency throughout the titration phases, with visits to healthcare professionals in between. Once the patient reaches the target titration they would remain on that schedule permanently.

Since the injections would occur quite far apart for a large part during the drug titration, rather than trying to teach patients and their care givers about the overall titration process, the app would focus on the next important task and provide encouragement at important milestones in their patient journeys, so that the app is only something they visit once in a while, giving the patients and their care givers agency in how they want to live their live with Alzheimer’s, without a reliance on a screen.
Dynamic Cards
One of the key features of the app are these dynamic cards on the home screen. They communicate the next important task for the user as well as give words of encouragement for when there are no pressing tasks.
